Marc Rangel On the Making Of “Closure”

What was the creative process like for this particular "Closure?"

Well, I wrote this song literally as soon as I got home from the experience the song is talking about. I had the chorus melody in my head and so I just had to figure out the words and piece them together.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "Closure" to life?

I brought the song to my producer & friend Brandon Zano, who I do 99% of my music with. I just knew I wanted this song to sound like an R&B classic. Something similar to what I grew up and love listening to. So it was definitely out of his comfort zone since he does more rock/pop stuff. So it’s always fun building the production up from scratch with him in my style.

What did you enjoy most about making "Closure?"

Honestly, I think it was doing all the harmonies and stacks. I tried things I never tried before and really trusted my own ear. It was the first time I kind of took control in the studio and trusted my own instinct in terms of the vocal arrangement.

Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?

I grew up in a musical household and family. Sitting around in a circle with my siblings, taking turns singing while our grandpa played the guitar. I always loved it. I began songwriting at 12 and would record so much music on Garage Band on my iPod touch. I knew this is what I wanted to do since then.

How do you balance crafting relatable stories with maintaining your unique voice as a songwriter?

I tend to write about my love life 10 times outta 10. I think it’s the most easiest of topics to digest and also a universally relatable subject. That being the good, bad, and in-between. But, I only write about MY personal experiences with it. So I get to still be vulnerable and open up about my feelings that I never express unless it’s in the music. Maybe one day I’ll feel the need to release songs about other things I go through, but for now, I’m more comfortable just spilling all the tea about my relationships haha.
