LOVESICK On the Making Of “Beach Foam (Summer Breeze Mix)”

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in "Beach Foam (Summer Breeze Mix)?"

NICK PHANEUF: We went on tour with the future islands for their very first tour. They were already amazing then, and we have stayed friends through the years. This is an old song of theirs - always a favorite. They gave us their blessing to put out these reimagined versions.

Terry Palmer took the song and recorded a version with Electric Guitars replacing all the synth parts and we released it here: promocards

William (Future Islands) calls this the Lovesick Dreampop Version.

GOOLKASIAN: Simultaneously, Nick Phaneuf fired up the Calabash Band and reimagined the song as a sort of campfire beach song. With Acoustic Guitars and even a lilting Slide guitar. This we call the Summer Breeze mix.

(Goolkasian) The hardest part for me was finding a way to convey the intense emotion of the lyrics in my style, which, after much struggle, I will be bold enough to say I think I feel great about. Sam's vocal performance on the original track is masterful.

What did you enjoy most about making "Beach Foam (Summer Breeze Mix)?"

I have caught a lot of pushback on the mix sounding washed out BUT I have ears and I know what I like! The ULTRA-HEAVEY BASS and REVERB DRENCHED DRUMs are modeled after old reggae songs.

Also, we had a blast making the Video especially the Mermaid on the Beach scenes. Heather Joy Morgan braved unusually frigid waters in Malibu. There was Snow covering the Hollywood hills at the time.

How does this single fit into your overall artistic vision?

Lovesick is basically an overdose. Exploring the splendor & madness of love. Our overarching themes of love, longing, and loss all fit into this song in different ways with each variation.

Can you share a valuable lesson or piece of advice that you have learned along your musical journey?

Secrets are best kept as secrets!

Are there any specific venues or festivals that you dream of performing at?

You need like a million dollars to play music. It’s become as expensive of a hobby as a drug addiction. So, any venue willing to give out $1,000,000 or more - cool with that.
