Linnéa On the Making Of ‘Fixation’

What is the inspiration behind "Blue Crystal?”

”Blue Crystal” is mainly about desire, wanting what you can’t have but being under the illusion that you can have it.

I find myself in these types of situations where I am getting “the boyfriend experience” but not the real experience. It can feel misleading.

“You show yourself to me, just to take away my sight” is the concluding lyric of the song and it is the realisation that the person you desired the most didn’t desire you back and they were essentially just messing with your head. Whether they were aware of that or not is their story.

”Lonely” is about being your own worst enemy, having to constantly contend with the negative voice inside your head and always losing to it. Desperately searching for inner peace amongst all the noise.

It’s something I’ve always struggled with since I was really young. I spent so much of my life living with such a toxic voice inside my head and “Lonely” is about wanting to get away from it. Fighting it off. Saying f*** off, I don’t need you!

“Fixation" being about grief and loss, did you encounter any challenges during the writing process?

This song is a reflection of my losses from a few years ago. I had to open the wounds up a little to be able to give the song the depth it needed, so of course that is a challenge in itself but I think there was also a lot that I was still holding onto from that time and writing this song gave me a sense of release.

That whole period of time, I was going through so much and I struggled to cope. I felt like everywhere I turned I lost something else. I shut down a lot and I spent endless days fixating on things I couldn’t change and on people I couldn’t bring back.

"Mother" is a reflective single inspired by conversations with your mother. How do you think the writing process helps/transforms your understanding of the relationship?

I have an incredible relationship with my mum, we really do have an unbreakable bond. The song “Mother” is a testament to how much she has been the key to my survival.

When we were having those tough conversations regarding mental health, I would always come away from them feeling so inspired by her words.

This song tackles imposter syndrome and the beginning of fighting back and regaining your strength, becoming resilient. My mum said to me “whenever the imposter tries to get into your head, you have to be stronger than it”. That stuck with me and after that conversation in particular, I headed straight to the piano and wrote this song!

Is "Predictable" the B-side of "Blue Crystal?" What made you decide to include the song in this EP?

“Predictable” is similar to “Blue Crystal”, in the sense that people always want what they can’t have, sometimes when they get it, they lose interest. But interest always peaks again. Those habits become predictable, you know you’re always going to go back to that relationship and the outcome is always, always going to be the same. Some people just gravitate towards each other whether it’s for good or bad reasons. I didn’t realise until I wrote this song how predictable I can be in these situations as well. So that was a lightbulb moment for me that I’ve got some bad habits I need to change!

I wanted to include this track because it brought some light heartedness and playfulness to the EP. Most of the songs have a lot of darkness and sadness attached to them but this one was a little more surface level and musically more uplifting.
