Leonardo Barilaro On the Making Of ‘Interstellar Notes’

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in 'Interstellar Notes?'

In the 'Interstellar Notes' EP, I experimented with blending the traditional acoustic piano with elements from real recordings of Space sound from NASA, to create a dreamy and ethereal sonic landscape. For one track, the Intermezzo Op.117 n.1 by Brahms, I designed the synth layering to boost the space-y atmosphere of the composition.

How does 'Interstellar Notes' fit into your overall artistic vision?

This EP serves as a key step within my artistic vision, representing a fusion of my fascination with outer Space and my passion for music. It's about transcending boundaries and exploring uncharted territories, both musically and conceptually. This EP is a sonic exploration of the cosmos, inviting listeners to experience a voyage of discovery and introspection.

What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making ‘Interstellar Notes?’

A defining moment during the creation of the "Interstellar Notes EP" came when I revisited key pieces from my early days as the Space Pianist, like Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and Dream Theater's Wait for Sleep. This dive into my musical past resonated with my exploration of NASA's real Space recordings. It wasn't just nostalgia, it was a fresh perspective on my passion for astronomy and space exploration, fuelled by both the familiar melodies and the awe-inspiring sounds of the cosmos. This blend of personal history, musical inspiration and the vastness of Space became the foundation for ‘Interstellar Notes,’ making it a special EP, a new step of my project “Music from Space”.

What has been the most memorable experience or achievement in your music career so far?

Having my music, twice, onboard the International Space Station being streamed to Earth!
In a few months, I will send more music into orbit with the project ASTROBEAT.

Are there strategies you use to maintain momentum and inspiration?

My inspiration finds sparks in diverse landscapes, the night sky's vastness, the ocean's depths, the worlds of literature and art. Every artist, every discipline, offers a potential spark.

Embracing the concept of "Nullo die sine nota" (Not a day without a note) I strive to create every day. Consistency fuels the creative fire, preventing stagnation. Discipline fuels our aspirations. By channelling daily dedication towards our artistic goals, we bridge the gap between dreams and reality. Working on real Space projects allows me to connect with incredible, multifaceted individuals worldwide. This exchange of ideas and experiences ignites a collaborative spirit and pushes me to explore new horizons.
