Koh-Dee On the Making Of “Always Remember”

How did you come up with the idea?

I came up with the idea when I was traveling around Australia on a road trip with my girlfriend and our friends, on our way to discover Uluru. I sometimes felt slightly jealous along the journey, and I didn’t want to anymore. I thought to myself “This is not warranted, these little feelings can be made up in my head” and therefore aren’t real. So instead of trying to bother my partner and friends about my insecurities and problems, I wanted to write a song about it so that I could remember how I should feel.

Can you talk about the recording and production process for "Always Remember?"

Well, I produced the beat of this track for another client of mine (I run my own music production business called ‘Koh-Dee Music’). Initially, it was meant to be for him and his song. However, his song inspirations went another way and he wanted me to make him a more ‘pop’ sounding instrumental instead. Which I did, and he was very happy with it. That still left me with this beat, and I didn’t want it to go to waste, so I used it for myself and my rap lyrics. I then recorded this track myself at my home studio in Tasmania, Australia, before leaving for France.

What are you most proud of about this track?

I am most proud that I did it, and that I’m sharing it. These are very personal opinions of myself that I have written about here, and they could be scrutinized in a multitude of ways. However, I find that honesty is key. For self-improvement, and to grow one’s true audience. I am very proud that I can create a rap song like this, produce it all myself, and perform it. That to me - who used to be solely just an electronic music producer, feels like an immense achievement in itself.

I also think that my rhymes and flow in this one have improved from the last song I wrote.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

Everywhere. Other people’s songs, my experiences, random music loops and samples that I find, environments and ambient sounds, my thoughts and feelings, my partner, and more.

Can you share a standout moment from one of your live performances that you'll never forget?

I was DJing my music at a forest doof in Tasmania (Australia) and one of my friends stayed the entire set, looking like he was entranced in my music - just vibing in front of me the whole time. That made me feel special.
