Kmalectro Releases “Panta rhei”
Can you briefly describe what the song/each song is about?
My music is a journey through emotions and experiences, aiming to connect deeply with listeners worldwide. The essence of my project, reflected in each song, revolves around the concept of movement and change, inspired by the ancient Greek idea of 'Panta Rhei' - everything flows. This philosophy resonates with my belief in the constant motion of life and the idea that stagnation is akin to not living fully. Drawing from a diverse palette of influences, from the rich heritage of Afghan music to the innovative sounds of electronic genres, my work seeks to blend these elements into a unique auditory experience. The songs on my latest project delve into themes of connection, resilience, and the pursuit of harmony in a world that's always in motion. One track that stands out is inspired by my journey from a refugee shelter to finding my voice in the world of music. It's a testament to the power of hope, family, and the solace found in music. Another piece explores the beauty of imperfection and the personal struggle with the concept of 'perfection,' reflecting my own discomfort with the weight of my name, Kamal. Through this album, I invite listeners to embrace the flow of life, to find comfort in the shared human experience of growth and change. My music is not just about the sounds but the stories and emotions that bind us all, encouraging us to look beyond material needs to what truly connects us: our humanity.
Is there a particular ethos behind the single/EP/album or any particular music styles or events that inspired it?
Making music is about sharing feelings for me, not just sending messages. I'm inspired by the idea that my music can connect with people around the world. Every person who enjoys what I create motivates me even more. My real name, Kamal, means 'perfection,' but mentioning this feels a bit uncomfortable. I really don’t want to come off as arrogant. To me, creating art is like adding to the world's beauty, aiming for a sense of wholeness. I believe in the power of emotions and nature to bring us closer, beyond the material world. I grew up with Afghan music in a refugee shelter, where I learned the value of family, friends, and living simply. These experiences taught me that music's worth goes beyond money. Despite facing negativity and self-doubt, especially after losing a close friendship, I'm slowly starting to recognize my own talent and potential. My musical influences are diverse, reflecting the many directions my life has taken. I'm excited yet nervous about my upcoming projects, which include a mix of German rap, indie rock electro, EDM, classical, and deep house. With six tracks in the making and plans for a new YouTube live format, I hope to find support and connection from my audience. I want to continue making music that resonates and brings us together.
Were there any notable or amusing happenings surrounding the recording/production of the EP?
Recording my EP was a journey filled with memorable moments. One amusing aspect was the challenge of creating music on the move. From the bustling streets of Cologne to the serene landscapes of Spain, my laptop was my mobile studio, often leading to unexpected yet creative solutions to technical hurdles. Another notable moment was the collaborative spirit with my friend Cyrus, who supported me not just technically in video production but also emotionally, helping me navigate the creative process. The laughter and late-night sessions added a layer of personal connection to the project. The mix and mastering phase brought its own set of challenges and triumphs. Working closely with my friend from Tone Jukeboxx, we found ourselves in intense debates over the smallest details, only to realize we were both striving for the same perfection. It was a reminder of the passion and precision that music demands.
Who are the band members and what do they play?
I am Kmalectro, but without my dog, the 'ectro' is missing. As the sole human member, I weave melodies and rhythms with piano, guitar, and tablas, constantly honing my skills because mastery is an ongoing journey. Currently, I'm creating magic with Cubase 12, my little treasure trove. However, one of my most essential 'band members' can't be overlooked – my Shiba, the true support behind the scenes. You might say we're the band. It makes me laugh out loud, but who are we without our beloved companions, whether human or otherwise? She's an expert at fetch and being stubborn, keeping me moving forward. So, yeah, we are Kmalectro – a blend of sounds, silence, and the occasional bark, proving that sometimes, the best music is a duo of man and man's best friend.??
Are there any other interesting or amusing happenings – no matter how small – that the band have been involved with that would be of interest to those who like your music?
Definitely! Besides the funny stories from the studio, there's something deeper about how I create music with Kmalectro. A lot of times, I don't even know where my ideas come from. They just show up out of nowhere, and as time goes on, a story I want to tell through my music starts to unfold. This gradual discovery is a big part of my art. Once, in the middle of the night, I found myself messing with a sound, not knowing where the idea came from. Days later, I realized this melody would be the heart of a whole album. These moments of sudden inspiration, along with the fun mishaps and having my loyal Shiba around, shape the stories behind my music. I don't like to question the process too much; I just let it happen. It's this openness to the unexpected that keeps my music real and true. Every track has its own story, sometimes mysterious, that only fully shows itself over time.
