KingQueen On the Making Of “That's Why She's Hot”
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "That's Why She's Hot" and the story it tells?
We actually were applying for the Eurovision Song Contest and you have to send in a song you’ve never performed live so we got into the rehearsal space and started messing around with sounds and different rhythms. We wanted to write something sassy and fun. Most of our songs touch base on battling depression, self-empowerment or heartbreak. So we wanted to do something different yet still empowering and that’s how “That’s Why She’s Hot” was born. We sent it in but it wasn’t chosen, Sweden missed out.
How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "That's Why She's Hot" to life?
We produce our music on our own and when we’re done we send it to our guy Gabe Lopez who mixes and master it. He’s great and understands our concept to the tea. He’s also worked with some great artists and his current projects are for Ru Paul’s drag race.
What was your favorite moment in making the music video?
We obviously love being in front of the camera and being on set but the best part was of course having Manila Luzon there. She is just a badass! One of the best actresses out there. Her comedy chops and facial expressions are just next level. She inspired us all and the funny thing is she had super powers in the music video but we are convinced she has them in real life because something changed on that set, for the better, we just got really inspired and the belief in our project grew even bigger. We’ve never needed anyone’s approval but it was “Manila Luzon approved” and that was a huge moment for us.
What has been the most memorable experience or achievement in your music career so far?
If there’s a top 3 then performing at the American Music Awards, performing San Francisco Pride which opened so many doors and of course having Manila Luzon in our music video. But in all honesty, any time we get to step on the stage we build great memories. Just connecting with the audience and doing what we love. Especially after the pandemic, we don’t take anything for granted.
Can you share a standout moment from one of your live performances that you'll never forget?
It was right when things started opening up after the pandemic again and a woman in tears came to thank us for the show and told us that her son who had passed away would have loved our music. And it really hit hard because it had been such heaviness on the planet for such a long time and just grateful to be able to get out there again and spread some comfort and happiness. Grateful to have been able to give her something special with the performance. And grateful to be able to keep doing this.
