King In Yellow On the Making Of “Hand In Fan”
What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Hand In Fan?"
KM: the song came from Nick listening to the Smiths and the Ramones and how the girl group influence of the 60s was so well utilized and we looked to expand on that in our own voice, the lyrics were born of my life just kind of beating me down and just feeling like I couldn't get a leg up in life like I was just doomed to be in this purgatory of negativity.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this single?
One thing about us is we don't really mess around when we go into the studio, we don't waste any time we make it all count, whether we are recording or self-editing. Chris Turco who produced this and recorded it is the best and easiest guy to make records with he got the idea and really trusted us with what we wanted.
Can you describe the emotions or feelings you hope "Hand In Fan" evokes in listeners?
I want people to hear this and find the courage to stand up to whatever oppression is keeping them from the life they deserve.
Can you tell us more about you as a band?
We have known each other for over a decade and have played in and out of bands together for that long as well, Nick and I started this project as a new outlet to really explore songwriting and the art of music crafting, Familiar elements in unfamiliar orders. It's truly a group effort where we all bring inspiration into the music we're all writing ideas and creating this together.
Can you share a valuable lesson or piece of advice that you have learned along your musical journey?
Always make music for yourself first and foremost, if you don't enjoy what your doing what's the point.
