Kid Apollo On the Making Of ‘Imposter’
What was the creative process like for this particular 'Imposter?'
A lot of these songs were produced in a much shorter timeframe than usual. I think it's because I was really tuned in to the kind of sound I wanted this time, and also the main theme of the record, which is that of Imposter Syndrome - it's a consistent presence in my world!
How does 'Imposter' fit into your overall artistic vision?
I think as an artist it's really important to dive into those uncomfortable feelings of frustration and feeling like you're not good enough. Almost every creative person has them. Writing songs is a bit like therapy for me, so getting this EP out in the world is a bit like lifting some weight off my shoulders. In the grand scheme of my discography, I think ‘Imposter’ contains some of my most direct and honest songs yet, as well as some of my strongest production and songwriting.
What has been one of your favorite memories along the path to making 'Imposter?'
Collaborating with Donegal musician and multi-talented maverick, 'Arn.' I don't collaborate enough with other musicians, and working on 'Like An Old Dog' with Arn was a real highlight of the whole process. It was so easy and natural, and I think you can hear it in the production of the song. We also debuted the song live together during the Summer as well! #dreamteam
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?
I've always loved music and finally realised a few years ago that it's what I enjoy more than anything else in life (why this took 21 years, I do not know). During the lockdowns in 2020 I decided that life was too short not to pursue a solo project, so I released the music that I was working on, and the ball started rolling from there.
What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?
Seeing people react to songs that I wrote and produced in my own bedroom. It's a bit scary to share that part of yourself with the world, but it's such an amazing feeling when people enjoy it. I guess the double edged sword of being on the stage is the attention. While it can be really awkward and intimidating sometimes, it also can really boost your confidence. People who wouldn't normally listen to you will see you in a different light, and you get a sense of connection that you never would have otherwise. It's a bit of magic tbf.
