Kelsey Blackstone On the Making Of “Leaving Boston - Live”

Is there a person/event that stimulated the creation of "Leaving Boston - Live?"

I wrote “Leaving Boston” about a year ago, when it started really sinking in that I was going to be leaving my first home away from home. I’m originally from CT but moved to Boston for school and that was where I started my music career and met a lot of people that I loved along the way. I just moved to Nashville three weeks ago to take the next step in my music career, and it’s been a really bittersweet transition in my life. It’s hard to say goodbye to people and places you love, but sometimes you have to do what’s best for you and I know that being here is right.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this song?

I decided to go against the grain a little bit by releasing this as a live and solo artist song. In the music world today there is a lot of pressure to look and sound perfect, but I’ve always loved a bit more realness and honesty in my art. I’m hoping that this song eventually connects with other people that feel the same way. I had a great session with Jeff Wang from Model Peril Sounds. He helped make the song come to life.

What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

The video is coming out on March 26th, and it was a really cool experience to record audio and video at the same time. This song is honest and raw and real, and I think the video reflects that too.

How did you get started in music, and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?

I’ve always been a musician and using it as a tool to communicate and process emotions became very important to me pretty early on in life. I believe in the power of unity music can provide, and how it can inspire people to come together and build a community of love and acceptance. The act of making music is cathartic and is kind of addicting in that way, and it feels even better when you’re hearing your own song come to life. Being a singer-songwriter means I have something to say and share with the people who are meant to listen.

How has your music evolved since you started as a singer-songwriter? What have been some key milestones in your artistic journey?

My music is always evolving, I’m not really sure if I’ve found the perfect recipe for the most “me” sound… every song I’ve put out sounds a little different from the one before. I just believe in personal growth and think it’s a natural part of music making too. I will say, a big milestone that helped me get more into the creative zone was finding a group of people that I was consistently working with: other musicians, producers, visual artists, and more. It takes a lot of work from a lot of people to get a song released into the world! I’m very grateful to anyone who has helped me bring any of my music to life.
