K-Bust On the Making Of “Heartbeat”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

The process for this song was very instinctive. It all started with that synth melody you hear in the intro—it had this instant spark that just drew me in, and I knew I had to capture it before it slipped away. So, I immediately opened a new session in Logic, recorded the melody, and let it guide the whole vibe of the track. From there, I layered in a simple beat that gave the song its upbeat, driving feel. That beat set the tone, and it was almost like everything else just fell into place from there. I kept building it up layer by layer, letting each new sound element amplify the mood and energy of the song.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for "Heartbeat" to life?

Actually, the entire process was very hands-on because I took on both roles as producer and mixing engineer for "Heartbeat" and the whole album it’s part of. I've produced for other artists before, so this time, I felt it was the right moment to take full creative control and shape the sound myself. I had a strong vision of the feel and message I wanted to convey, and while that made it a rich and rewarding experience, it was also incredibly challenging! I'm very detail-oriented and set high standards for myself, so every aspect—from the synth textures to the final mix—had to match the energy and intention I envisioned for this track. It was an intense process, but one that felt true to the heart of the song.

What impact do you hope "Heartbeat" will have on your audience?

I really hope "Heartbeat" strikes a chord with listeners on both an emotional and musical level. When I wrote it, I imagined how it would feel to perform live, envisioning the energy I’d bring and the way it would connect with the audience. It's a high-energy track, but there’s also a lot of vulnerability in it—I put my raw emotions right at the surface, hoping that others will feel that intensity too. My wish is for "Heartbeat" to resonate so deeply that it becomes part of people’s personal soundtracks, something they turn to in moments when they need that spark or feel the emotions I pour into it.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

For starters, I'm a self-taught musician—I feel like music has always been a part of me, like I was born with it in my veins. I’m a multi-instrumentalist and producer, and I have a serious obsession with synths and 80’s music. I’d even call myself an “instrument junkie” because my studio is packed with them! Having so many different instruments around lets me dive into new sounds and textures when I’m creating. My musical taste is pretty eclectic, too; I love blending influences from the cultures I grew up in, Chilean and Canadian. Although my biggest influence is and always has been pop music, I draw from all kinds of genres to keep my sound dynamic and fresh.

Can you share a memorable experience from a collaboration that enriched your music?

One of the most defining experiences was my time in Berlin, Germany, back in 2014. A friend connected me with a producer there while I was still exploring and shaping my own sound. We spent time writing and developing new songs, and he introduced me to an aesthetic that felt bold, raw, and entirely new to me. It was edgy but resonated perfectly with my artistic personality, pushing me to embrace a deeper, more authentic side of my music. Then, when I returned home to Montreal, I started working with a local producer, and that collaboration was pivotal in another way—it was then that I discovered my own potential as a producer. Working side by side in the studio gave me the confidence to take the reins on my sound, and eventually, I went on to co-write my album Fearless. Both of these experiences left a lasting impact on my music, laying the foundation for the creative direction of my upcoming third album, set for release in 2025.
