Johnaé Elease On the Making Of “Headphones”

What was the creative process like for this particular "Headphones?"

It was a healing process as much as it was a creative process, because I consider songwriting to be a form of therapy. I penned the song back in 2018 and recorded the master track this year. The lyrics came together quickly because they were based on what was happening in my life at that time. As for the production process, everything flowed effortlessly because I already had a clear vision for the instrumental and the right people in place to help execute it. All in all, I enjoyed it and had fun creating this work of art.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for this "Headphones?"

The biggest challenge was living through the experiences that inspired the song...but in hindsight, I'm glad that I went through it because the song would've never existed. Those experiences also shaped the person I am today: I'm stronger, wiser, and a lot more fearless when it comes to being my true, quirky self.

What did you enjoy most about making "Headphones?"

I enjoyed writing the song the most. It was actually the first song that I had ever written. The process prompted me to dig deep and do some soul-searching as to what was causing me to experience social anxiety, how it affected me, and how I best handled it. It also allowed me to release some bottled-up emotions that I needed to let go of. Now that it's out, the song is a reference that I can revert to on days when I'm feeling a little anxious, reminding me of how I got through it before.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

Growing up around my mother (who is a phenomenal singer) and other legendary musicians that she's sung with, including Grammy Award-winning gospel artists Walter and Edwin Hawkins (creator of the song "Oh Happy Day"). They all played an impactful role in my upbringing and it's safe to say that I got the singing bug from them.

How do you continuously grow and evolve as an artist?

I'm always developing new material and so now I just have to get it out there! There's much more to come and I can't wait for those who enjoy my music to hear it.
