Izzy Pingrey On the Making Of ‘Junior’

What was the creative process like for this particular 'Junior?'

It took a really long time. I’d write the songs as the events they were about happened, for the most part. I write in weird places, like on bikes and in the shower and while I’m walking around. Since the EP was my way of processing a lot of my feelings, there was minimal planning involved.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for 'Junior?'

I was a huge perfectionist with “sick of it.” It was the first song I ever did, and we spent months on it. I re-recorded my vocals a million times, I changed things around. The biggest challenge was definitely my own perfectionistic insanity.

What is your personal favorite song from 'Junior' and why?

My favorite song is “flatline.” It has my favorite chord progression and lyricism out of all of my songs, and represents my favorite of all of the life experiences that ‘Junior’ covers.

Could you share some of your musical influences and how they have shaped your sound?

I like women who get angry and vulnerable. I like Alanis Morrisette and Fiona Apple and Taylor Swift. I think that really shaped the way that I put my feelings into my songs.

What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?

I think that emotions are my music. I find it easier to put that into any performance because they’re in the lyrics.
