Groundstate On the Making Of “Perfect Timing”

Can you share any interesting or unique musical elements or production techniques used in "Perfect Timing?"

One thing I like a lot about that track that makes it kind of unique is the time signature switch during the bridge, we switch into a a few measures of 5 and 7 before going back into the straight 4, the rest of the song is pretty straight forward so we wanted to do something to make that part really stand out a bit.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Perfect Timing?"

One of the challenges Connor faced was perfecting the screams going into each chorus, it was the first time he really utilized any harsh vocals for a song and it was something he’s been wanting to start doing more of for future material so getting that down was a big step for him in regards to evolving his vocal style.

How do you translate the essence and energy of "Perfect Timing" in a live performance?

Perfect Timing is a very intense track, and technically it requires a lot of tough vocal synchronization between Aidan and I in the chorus because it’s very harmony oriented; so it requires a lot of focus and energy to be able to nail the kind of ferocious sound that track brings in a live setting.

Is there a specific song that holds a particularly special meaning to you? Can you share the story behind it?

Winning Numbers is a very significant song to me as I wrote it for a good friend of mine who’s Dad was an early supporter of ours and sadly had passed away prior to the release of the record, so I had promised him we would put a song on the record dedicated to him and that track was the result.

Can you share a standout moment from one of your live performances that you'll never forget?

One moment I’ll never forget that happened rather recently was when we were opening our show with World Around You while playing at The Grog Shop in Cleveland, our drummer’s stick snapped during the intro and half of it ricocheted off his snare and ended up going straight into my arm! I had to just yank it out and ended up playing through the rest of the set with my arm bleeding all over the place hahaha, it was just a really funny random moment Link to incident: Instagram
