Fran Lusty Talks Journey Behind “I’m Blue”

Dreamful, somber, and immersive like gazing into the ocean, “I’m Blue” tackles the tender, melancholy feelings that are lost in words. “I wrote ‘I’m Blue’ a couple of years ago after watching a sappy rom-com. I was certain about love being a myth,” said Fran Lusty, who laid out a demo but later forgot about it a few years back.

At the beginning of 2021, she rediscovered the track when she revisited her old computer, which later became the version we now hear, “I believe in love now, so I guess some progress has been made!” she said.

“I’m Blue” places you in the middle of the shifting thoughts where the edges are slightly distorted. Fran Lusty’s voice sounds surreal as if it comes from somewhere far away, being carried to your ears by the wind. There’s a certain spacious yet immersive aesthetic in Lusty’s music.

“I often write about the sea because it is such a mystery. Writing about it makes me feel as if I am in the middle of nowhere,” Lusty continued, “music is a way of processing feelings that cannot quite be expressed in any other way. It is motivating in that it liberates the little ball of energy that accumulates from living in a world with many frustrations.”

Connecting to the feelings that can’t be expressed in any other way, the artist also mentioned her love towards the bridge where frustration is expressed, “it felt good to let out,” she said.

Like many creative minds who were reconnected with their initial passion during the lockdown, Fran Lusty rekindled the flame in music last year, “I studied music in Brighton a few years ago and felt very uninspired after graduating,” she said, “I did a Master’s in Literature instead and set my guitar aside for a while,” she continued,

“During the lockdown, it became my companion again and so moved to London in September for more gigging opportunities. I have been discovering the big city through its many great venues.”
