Foundry Town Survivors “In My Dreams”

“In My Dreams” is a tune that you can sink deeper and deeper into until you have disappeared in the music. Yes, their music is that good. Introspective, story-soaked, essentially every line comes out of their instruments have something meaningful to say—whether it takes you on a thought-evoking journey or it stirs your heart a little or it reminds you of certain landscape and mood—“In My Dreams” is full of sensory evocations.

The swampy riff runs through the track like blood. It hits all the right spots for all the blues, country and rock n roll lovers. The landmark percussion clicks open a groovy, impressionistic soul-searching odyssey. Foundry Town Survivors take you on a scenic drive, telling stories that are always deeper than they appeared, brewing in the smoke and warmth of subtly ever-shifting soundscapes. “In My Dreams” stirs something deep inside of you. Like a long gaze atop of a mountain, there are thoughts and emotions being uncovered. Their music dives deeper behind the cheesy cliches into the real emotions, pains, love and entanglement. World-building through immersive sonic telling—there are characters and story plots living in the songs, and every single one of them takes you somewhere new and familiar, where you can lose yourself and find yourself again.

With Foundry Town Survivors’ music, it’s not about the destination but the journey itself. You’d want to savior every second of it, hearing them telling these tales with heart and soul, creativity blooming in the cauldron of blues, rock, country, Americana and folk. Something that is keen and burning, something that is warm and meaningful. Their music gets under you skin.

The drive Foundry Town Survivors take you on reminds a little of reading Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. Authenticity and raw creativity, the beautiful combination of life and art.

Punk Head: I love the organic flow between the instruments and the voice and how the entire storytelling is being built that way.

Foundry Town Survivors: Thank you! No Artificial Intelligence here! At times we wonder if there’s any intelligence, but that soon passes. It’s all on purpose. We choose to tell a story or describe an emotion, that builds throughout the song. We purposely try to stay within our realm: guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards to keep it “organic.” We love Rock music, as it descended from the roots of American music, Blues, Country and Jazz. We’re very comfortable working there.

PH: Can you tell us a little more about your early days playing blues in and out of Detroit?

Foundry Town Survivors: Let’s just say those early days are a bit hazy. What we still carry with us today is the ability to leave stuff out. In the blues, if you play too much or too many notes, you will not get hired back. You need to SAY something with your playing. As a guitarist, you learn to sing on the guitar as if it’s a voice. As a bassist you learn to lock into the pulse of the song with the drummer and keep the band humming along. That’s the big lesson we learned very young and it is still one of our primary considerations when writing. Of course, we played a lot of divey bars with an amazing cast of characters that we still reminisce about, the girls, the after parties, the sheer joy of playing what was in your heart and in your soul. We wouldn’t trade that knowledge for anything.

PH: What do you like the best about this track?

Foundry Town Survivors: It rocks like a big dog! The swampy guitar riff had been bouncing around for a while until I played it for Tom and he went, “I know just what to do with that,” and he took it over the finish line. It’s what we loved about British blues back when The Animals, Savoy Brown, early Fleetwood Mac, Blodwyn Pig, and Led Zeppelin were teaching us about our roots! We loved the way they pumped it up. No excuses.

PH: What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

Foundry Town Survivors: Why, lunch and the donut breaks, of course! Actually everything about doing a video was our favorite moment. Up until then we had shown very little of ourselves in our videos. This was the first time we were going to be featured in the whole thing, warts and all. And why not? We’re not runway models, we’re musicians! We are who we are and we’re owning it.

PH: Can you tell us more about you as a band?

Foundry Town Survivors: We’ve always leaned toward songs that are descriptive in some way, that tell you a story, or at least take you from point A to point B. We don’t do the typical “boy loves girl” or whatever songs. The Beatles wrote them all already anyway. We like to look behind the curtain when it comes to emotion and interaction and always with a twist. Just like a good Stephen King novel…

What is the one thing that you’d like your fans to know about you?

Foundry Town Survivors: We’re doing this because we’ve gotten pretty good at it and we are having FUN! (and we want to share!)
