Fly Janet On the Making Of ‘Splash Royale’
What was the creative process like for this particular EP?
Chris Badger (bassist): Drew and I live in different states. When we get together, it's for recording and shows. So once we are in the same room together, we are constantly writing. We have literally finished an album and are immediately working on new ideas. Having a decent home studio makes it a lot easier and fun too.
What are you most proud about 'Splash Royale?'
Personally there are a couple things. First off Drew's guitar writing really shines through on this ep. He is my favorite guitarist, songs like “50k” “pipe dream,”and “head of cow” are so different from anything I've ever written with him. Hearing the ideas for the first time, left me speechless... which if anyone out there knows me, that doesn't happen a lot. Second the album art is from an artist named Meghan Sadler, who just happens to be my sister. Any chance we get to collaborate together is so special to me. Our mother passed away right before the album release was announced, so working together on this really brought us closer as siblings and helped us with grieving.
How do you feel this EP represents your artistic identity?
Drew and I grew up in punk and rock music scenes together. Artistically this album is a little different from a traditional surf rock album. I like to think our upbringing shaped our ability to say "fuck it". We love this album, we are a surf rock band, but we don't care if it doesn't have that traditional surf rock sound.
Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?
Our band name is based off a fake airline company that flys employees to Area 51. We get a lot of inspiration, when writing, from vibing out together in our studio, while watching YouTube videos about lore and conspiracies.
Can you share a standout moment from one of your live performances that you'll never forget?
Like I said earlier, Drew and I grew up together in Texas. We've played in many bands together over our lifespan. It had been years since we played music together. Our first Fly Janet show will be something I remember for the rest of my life. It was like reconnecting with a lost brother. I got my brother back at that show.
