Fleur Lion On the Making Of “Prey (semi live video)”
How does "Prey" reflect your musical journey and growth as an artist?
“Prey” is about not valuing yourself, but ultimately choosing to do so and putting yourself first. This has actually always been a recurring theme in my songwriting.
I usually follow my inner feelings about what suits me. From that, experiences arise that I can learn from.
Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for this song?
Not really actually. I remember when I wrote “Prey,” I was in a good flow. I think I spent about two days writing it. It was during COVID-19, so I didn't have many distractions from the outside world. That’s actually an important factor when it comes to writing songs.
What was your favorite moment in making this track?
When I was recording the vocals.
My producer came up with the idea to adjust the vocal lines a bit. When we did that, it created a nice effect and 'Prey' changed with another dynamic.
I’ve noticed that when I’m in the studio for vocal recordings, we suddenly come up with new ideas that can make my songs more interesting.
What is your songwriting process like? How do you usually start crafting a new song?
That is always different. Sometimes I suddenly have an idea and can quickly write a song. When I’m then full of inspiration and emotions for example. Other times, I have to sit for a view ours and take more time to write a song. I can start with the lyrics, and other times I have a beat or melody line. For me, there’s no set way of writing. A year ago I was fed up with angry emotions and helplessness. My boyfriend (at that time we were friends and I was secretly in love with him) told me to write my feelings down and write a song about them. When I did, I made something that made me very satisfied and relieved. That song is not finished yet, but I definitely want to release it in the future.
Can you recall a particular moment, artist, or experience that had a significant influence on your music?
In 2009, I won a meet and greet with Eagle Eye Cherry. He’s an artist I really admire. He has a beautiful voice, and I think his songs are awesome. I asked him what advice he would give to a beginning artist. He said to always stay true to yourself. It might be a cliché answer, but it definitely applies to me. Sometimes we just go along or follow trends, but if you put something of yourself into it that’s genuine, then it has soul.
