Feature: The Urban Complex Decodes ‘Natural Selection’

Can you share any interesting or unique stories or perspectives in this 'Natural Selection?'

I recently built a home studio in my backyard, and although I have a drumkit there, I have always wanted to experiment with a heavy guitar sound and more modern beats. Kim (bassist) and I have played in various musical projects throughout the years, but we both wanted to go back to our roots and play something heavier. So these are the first recordings from the new studio.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this 'Natural Selection?'

We took our time, One of the joys of having your own studio is that time is not a cost factor, It has been nice to be able to take time to go into depth with the tracks and add some small details

Which song do you like the best and why?

I like the opening track, "In the shadows Light" iI was listening to "Baba O'Riley" by the Who, and liked the idea of the repeating keyboard sound throughout the number. I think it works nicely in our number, almost always there in the background

How did your band members initially come together?

Kim and I have known each other for over 20 years, we have played in various musical projects and watched our kids grow up together, It is something we have been wanting to do for some time.

Can you walk us through your creative process when writing and composing music?

Music like any art form is inspired by the things you see, hear, and experience. Sometimes I have an idea in the car and hum it into the hands free, other times it is whilst I am sitting in the studio jamming with a Guitar or bass. More often than not the lyrical theme is already there in the initial ideas i play, and i build upon that theme.
