Feature: Soft Set Decodes “Gone”

How does "Gone" reflect your musical journey and growth as a duo?

“Gone” feels like a culmination of where we’ve been creatively and where we’re headed. As a duo, James and I experimented with various sounds and textures in the studio that define our style. Over time, we’ve grown together as songwriters, learning to combine our strengths and refine our sound. We've also brought in some incredible musicians who have joined us for live performances, adding layers and depth we couldn’t have achieved with just the two of us on stage. It’s a testament to our journey and the evolution of Soft Set, really.

Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in "Gone?"

The lyrics in “Gone” touch on loss and moving forward while holding onto memories. It’s about the beauty and pain in letting go of something—or someone—who once meant the world to you but is no longer in your life. That sense of nostalgia and reflection is a central part of the song, aiming to capture the bittersweet nature of those moments.

What was your favorite moment in making the music video?

One of the best parts was watching the narrative we envisioned come to life and meeting Alandra McKirdy who stars in the video! We wanted the video to have a dreamy, cinematic quality that mirrored the song’s nostalgic feel, and seeing that captured on screen was incredible. Working with talented people who understood our vision allowed us to get creative with visuals and explore ideas that aligned perfectly with the track’s mood.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

Music has always been a huge part of both our lives, even before Soft Set. We were drawn to the storytelling aspect, how songs can capture a specific feeling or moment in time. The ability to translate raw emotion into sound and share it with people is an indescribable experience, and that’s what’s kept us going, pushing us to explore more and grow as artists.

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?

Yes! We've got a new EP (‘Gone EP’ ) coming out on Nov 15th on all digital platforms along with a vinyl release in early December! We'll also be doing more live shows to support the upcoming release!
