Feature: Samuel Makanda Decodes “Darling...”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

The creative process while making “Darling…” was refreshingly nostalgic and true escapism. Escapism from all the fast mood music I’ve been getting forcefully fed from the mainstream media. While making “Darling…” nothing was off the table musically, it was all about creating a piece of art that the whole world could sing and dance to. I wanted “Darling…” to be the staple in time; the red blood stain on the carpet a.k.a the music industry. I wanted “Darling…” to show the world and industry that musically & sonically everything changes from here. Only soul music shall prosper.

Have you noticed any particular interpretations or connections that listeners have made with “Darling..?”

Yes, I was quite surprised how many people liked this new version of “Darling…” immediately after I released it. That kind of gave me a sense of urgency to go all into this song, pour my attention into it. I’m currently filming the short film “Darling…” as we speak. This will be Part 4 in my Musical Sequel “Character Assassination.”

What did you enjoy most about making "Darling...?"

I would say I mostly enjoyed the creative process while working on “Darling…” There were numerous times when I would play the unfinished demos back to back just so I could find any mistakes. Every cord and instrument placement mattered. Everything mattered, every detail and sound mattered.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

Being an artist is all I know. Being creative is my life’s work. The fact that I’ve been creating art for 5 years and haven’t given up is a testament to my artistry. One thing I gained from being an Independent artist is knowing your purpose and the understanding of having total ownership of your art and the artistic vision that you create.

What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?

The main thing I enjoy about performing is being on stage. Being on stage is what I work for, it’s what I long for. The stage is my playground, it’s the only place I know where to express my creativity freely. I have a lot of work to do before I can master the stage, but with consistency and practicing every day on my craft, the sky is the limit.

To answer your final question, connecting with my audience is an intimate moment for me. I make sure when I’m performing to give them all my energy and charm. Because I do this for them. I love all my supporters wholeheartedly. I wouldn’t be here without their love and support. Everything I do, I owe it to them.
