Feature: Said Sara Decodes “Then There You Are”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
The lyrics took forever, but I swear that once I let the rarely-explored astrological element of my brain take over, they flowed as if guided by the milky way itself! The music was written in an hour, mainly because I stole the "Toys 'R Us Kid" jingle's hook.
Was there any challenge that you encountered while making "Then There You Are?"
Finding the time! I'm a special ed teacher at a public high school in San Francisco.
How do you feel "Then There You Are" represents your artistic identity?
It's everything. From the 80s and 90s alt influence to the punk attitude to references to the extremes of my musical taste (Deicide and The Innocence Mission are both referenced in the lyrics). This is me in 2024.
Are there any specific themes or messages that you aim to convey through your music?
In “Then There You Are,” what I'm trying to get across is that the guidance that you feel from someone close who has passed away is real. Recognize it and do what they would have done.
What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?
The way that the anxiety builds before hand, then explodes into fun on stage.
