Feature: Roger Ricks Decodes “I Would Do It”
What was the creative process like for this particular song?
When I wrote this song, I was in a very sad mood, feeling helpless, and these emotions were so strong that the song just poured out of me. I sat down, and it flowed. There are times when you keep changing things and work on a song for a long time. But with this song, everything came together very naturally, and after about 20 minutes, it was composed. That was about 15 years ago. It took me all this time to finally gather the courage to release this deeply personal song.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "I Would Do It?"
In the original version, the ending of the song was different. During the recording session for the final version, I decided to repeat the lines after the second chorus and slightly changed their form. Suddenly, everything came together, and I felt a surge of strong emotions within me. These were the exact emotions I had when I first wrote the song, and I realized that this passage could evoke strong feelings in others as well. Ultimately, that’s what music is about: evoking emotions.
What impact do you hope "I Would Do It" will have on your audience?
Roger Ricks is actually known for his rock songs with catchy guitar riffs and energetic melodies. With this song, I wanted to show a different side of Roger Ricks and write something a bit quieter and more accessible. I hope that my existing listeners will find this venture into unfamiliar territory interesting, and that new listeners will discover me through it.
Can you tell us more about you as an artist?
I am a multi-instrumentalist from Switzerland, and I record and produce my music at home by myself. For me, music has always been a powerful tool for coping with unpleasant emotions and difficult life situations. Music has an incredible power to heal, connect people, and build bridges. That's why I decided to use my music to make a positive contribution by turning it into a charity project. The proceeds from my music go to organizations that help provide children in difficult circumstances with a better future. Every stream is a small donation. It takes only 30 seconds of streaming to contribute to improving a child's future prospects. The idea is that you don't have to open your wallet to donate; you can simply help by listening to music.
How has your music evolved since you started as a singer-songwriter? What have been some key milestones in your artistic journey?
I am a self-taught musician, having taught myself both how to play guitar and how to use production techniques. I even built the guitars I play myself. For me, making music is both an expression of my emotions and a continuous learning process of new skills. As a result, my music is always evolving, even though I have always stayed true to classic rock. Each song has its own story, and I strive to tell it as honestly and authentically as possible. I don't write songs to appeal to a specific audience; I hope that listeners can feel the emotions in my songs and appreciate them. No AI-generated or constructed songs, just real feelings from an artist who is willing to take fans on a journey through his music.
