For me, "Don't Play" serves as a mantra for individuals who feel undervalued, underestimated, and lacking in confidence. It also serves as a warning to those who impose their biases and insecurities on such individuals. The song expresses the idea of focusing on one's own path without letting others' opinions disrupt the pursuit of greatness.
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Don't Play?”
I would highlight the bridge because it allowed me to express myself authentically. I hadn't written it until I entered the studio, as I initially thought I had conveyed everything necessary in the chorus. Once I nailed it, the result felt powerful and uplifting.
What did you enjoy most about making "Don't Play?”
Firstly, I appreciated the release of frustration and the therapeutic aspect of the process. Additionally, stacking harmonies was my favorite part, drawing inspiration from the influential singer Brandy. The acapella version of "Don't Play" will be released at the end of the month, allowing listeners to appreciate the intricate details of the harmonies.
What is your songwriting process like? How do you usually start crafting a new song?
Typically, I like to throw ideas on a wall, like tossing spaghetti, to see what resonates. In this particular case, my inspiration came from producer LouXtwo. Upon hearing his track, the combination of his beat and the anger and frustration I felt that day allowed the lyrics to flow naturally. While I usually focus on topline writing, any source can inspire me.
How do you hope your music resonates with your audience? What message or feeling do you aim to convey through your vocals?
I genuinely hope that "Don't Play" serves as a source of encouragement for those who feel undervalued, underestimated, and lacking in confidence. The song aims to inspire listeners to eliminate negativity from their lives and strive towards their purpose, embracing their authentic selves.
