Feature: Mardi Tickle Decodes ‘Glitter Revolution’
What was the creative process like for this particular EP?
It’s typical for me to take my time in finalizing songs, and this EP was no exception. I enjoy the process of songwriting, allowing ideas to evolve gradually. For example, “Circus Called Life” took two years to go from a simple concept to a finished song. While I didn’t initially set out to create an EP, over time, it became clear that these three tracks naturally formed a cohesive collection. I may be overlooking some of the more challenging parts of the creative process, but overall, it was an enjoyable and, perhaps, even liberating experience!
Were there any moments in the recording process where you knew you had something special?
‘Glitter Revolution’ is a direct reflection of my childhood and youth. I hadn't shared this with my producers before they sent over some background samples, but those samples captured the exact feeling I had growing up in the '90s. In that moment, I knew my compositions and lyrics had truly resonated, and when paired with the production, everything would come together perfectly.
How does 'Glitter Revolution' fit into your overall artistic vision?
I feel that it brings me closer to the artist I aspire to be and the songwriter I aim to become.
Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?
My first introduction to music came when I was three or four years old, starting kantele (a traditional Finnish instrument) lessons. Soon after, I began piano and music theory lessons. At home, I immersed myself in rock 'n' roll and dreamed of being a rock star. I even told my mother at a young age, "Composing is easy - it’s just notes you knit into a net." Over the years, I’ve studied music and played in various bands across different genres, from heavy metal and big band to folk, classical orchestra, piano/cello duos, and party bands. In 2018, I released my first EP as Mardi Tickle.
How has your music evolved since you started as a singer-songwriter? What have been some key milestones in your artistic journey?
I truly feel that I’ve been able to bring my artistic vision to life. My music has become more upbeat, more danceable, and infused with a sense of humor. I’ve let go of any self-pity, and now I approach life with a deeper sense of gratitude. I’m focused on embracing the good things in life, and I think that shift is reflected in my music.
Some key milestones in my journey have been releasing my debut album in 2019 and performing at significant venues in Finland, like the legendary Kulttuuritalo (Helsinki Hall of Culture). Winning a songwriting competition in 2007 was a major turning point for me at 15, giving me the confidence and momentum to keep pushing forward.
