Feature: Homunculus Algorithm Decodes “Sunkissed Shadows”

How does "Sunkissed Shadows" reflect your musical journey and growth as an artist?

“Sunkissed Shadows” is the first co-write under the Homunculus Algorithm banner, which I wrote with my friend James. It was paired with two remixes my friends at IXth Key and Solemn Youth. Compared to the Ace of Myths LP written in isolation, this was a very collaborative process.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for this song to life?

I produce and record all my work in my home studio, which is where we started writing this song. James did further work in his own home studio. Adam Stilson, who does mixing and mastering for me, always does stellar work: I'd say he's an essential part of that Homunculus sound.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

I produced my first record while I was still living in Chicago. This EP/single was my first project after getting settled in Indianapolis. Sonically I work primarily with a collection of synthesizers, but I like to use more traditional instruments when I can make them fit the sound. Though I guess at this point synthesizers are quickly becoming more "traditional" with over a century of history. So what I meant was guitars, clarinets, acoustic percussion, etc.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

I find inspiration in a few primary places. At times I may start with sound design and write around a really cool interplay between a couple of sounds. At other times I start with a lyric or melody that hits me. I also surround myself with lots of little vinyl creatures and art that I find musically inspiring. Music has always been very visual for me.
