Feature: Have Mercy Las Vegas Decodes ‘Light & Shade’

Can you talk about any specific themes or motifs that run throughout the album?

As far as themes or motifs running throughout the album there are a few but for us it's mainly divided into songs that are jovial, fun and upbeat: the Light. & songs that deal with more complex and darker subject matter: the Shade. As anyone who has heard the album can probably tell it's genre spanning and quite difficult to box but we feel there is a common thread of good song writing, strong musicianship and big harmonies.

Were there any moments in the recording process where you knew you had something special?

We all have different favourite songs throughout the album but we all agree that the overall album is something we are really proud of. For me, it was when we listened to it as a band, start to finish, for the first time. Everyone was quiet and emotional and smiling throughout and we hope we have some fans out there that feel the same way!

Which song(s) from the album do you think best represents your artistic vision?

This is a really difficult question as the album isn't boxed to one genre or feeling but what I would say is that "Boon Step" probably fits what we are, across the board, really well. Although we have had the best feedback from, "Heartbreak Rain", "She Looks Portuguese" and "Namaste".

How do you engage with your audience during your live performances to create a memorable experience for them?

For us, playing live, is the best thing. We love interacting and playing off of crowds!

As far as tailoring a performance for crowds I’d say we just pay them respect, if people want to spend their time and money to come and see us it's the least we could do. We practice really hard for live shows, we communicate with them and talk to them during the shows, we listen to their feedback and often ask crowds if they want rowdy songs or quieter ones and off stage we are always happy to talk about anything with anyone!

Are there any specific venues or festivals that you dream of performing at?

Great question, we have been lucky enough to play some great venues with some amazing bands too but a support with Mumford & Sons or Old Crow Medicine Show would be the absolute epitome. We would also love to a sold out Edinburgh Fruit market or Bandstand at some point!
