Feature: Gianfranco Malorgio Decodes “Dark Night”

What was the spark or initial idea that led to the creation of "Dark Night?"

“Dark Night” is an introspective vision of a man on a journey.

I travel a lot for work and am almost always alone and often find myself immersed in thoughts and reflections that evoke situations related to memories.

In traveling, the noises, the smells, the sea at night, the rain, the passengers are the elements that inspired me and that gave life to the composition.

Were there any memorable or exceptional moments during the recording sessions for this single?

I worked a lot with synthesizers on this track, and we spent some time looking for the right sounds.

How do you think "Dark Night" represents your artistic identity?

After playing Gypsy Jazz for many years with my band Hot Club Roma, I started composing very different songs, moving away from the Gypsy sound. I have always loved film music and so I am trying to create songs that tell a story in a few minutes. I try to evoke different emotions and sensations just like in film scenes. In “Dark Night” I think I have told my compositional ideas that are inevitably linked to my life experiences.

What has been the most memorable experience or result in your musical career so far?

As a rhythm guitarist I believe that studying Gypsy Jazz, which I was lucky enough to study together with other musicians passionate about the genre, has given me great satisfaction and the opportunity to go on stage with top-level artists such as Dorado Schmitt, Sanson Schmitt, Noè Reinhardt, Popy Basily, Angelo Debarre and violinist Tim Kliphuis with whom I also recorded a CD "Django mon amour" with the Hot Club Roma band I founded in 2005. As for my new compositions such as “Dark Night” I hope they can soon be used for synchronization in films or TV series. The approach with synthesizers has given me the opportunity to experiment with vintage sounds but at the same time they are also new and current.

Do you have a personal favorite among your compositions? What makes this piece special for you?

I often draw inspiration from dark scenarios, painful stories or introspective feelings that always foresee a rebirth, a revenge or an emotion that turns positive, a bit like Yin and Yang.

There is no real favorite among my songs but I feel like saying that this last composition really represents me.
