Feature: FAINN Decodes ‘Cinema Sessions’

What was the creative process like for this particular 'Cinema Sessions?'

I actually started my career by releasing cover songs. Reimagining some of my favorite songs that mean a lot to me is something that I have always enjoyed. But, in the past, I have mostly kept the production really minimal, usually just a piano vocal. This time, I wanted to go big and see how cinematic we could go. I collaborated with producer Spencer Broschard, who was totally on board with the idea and we had a blast creating these songs together.

Were there any moments in the recording process where you knew you had something special?

I definitely had one of those moments when we started working on “Bitter Sweet Symphony.” It was the first song that we worked on. There is so much space between the lyrics, and I feel like Spencer just knew how to work with it sonically to bring it to life. The arrangement honestly came together so fast, and I feel like to was a really strong start to the project from a collaborative standpoint.

Which song(s) from 'Cinema Sessions' do you think best represents your artistic vision?

I think that “Bitter Sweet Symphony” and “I Won’t Back Down” really capture the cinematic elements that we were shooting for. All of the songs were so fun to work on, though.

Can you share a memorable experience from a collaboration that enriched your music?

There are so many that come to mind! Spencer and I are good friends, and he created such a relaxed atmosphere that really helped me when cutting my vocals. That is usually such a stressful experience for me, but it really wasn’t that way at all this time around. I will forever be grateful for that.

Do you have any memorable on-stage moments or performances that stand out to you?

Performing in a choir that supported Andrea Bocelli last year was something I don’t think I will ever forget. The energy in the arena was unlike anything I had ever experienced.

As far as solo shows go, my first ever showcase playing all of my songs (which was just last year) was such a special moment for me. Two of my dear friends (Julie Lavery and Sarah Darling) were also on the bill, so all of our friends and lots of family were there. It was the sweetest night.
