FACHY On the Making Of “I Can't Lie”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "I Can't Lie" and the story it tells?

“I Can’t Lie” tells a story about meeting the love of your life. It tells of the feelings involved in working through the process of meeting someone that you believe truly connects with. I feel like for most of us, we must go through the ups and downs of life, heartache, and the trials and tribulations associated to first understand who we are and what drives us. I believe that this creates the space necessary to be vulnerable enough to fall in love. After that, the song is about doing whatever it takes to hold on to it (not too tightly).

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for this song?

I must say, this one kind of came to me quickly. I find that the songs that stick around to recording are the ones most quickly made. Of course, sometimes it’s not quite like that but I found flow state on this one! One thing I would say is that allowing the song to breathe with the three-word chorus “I can’t lie”, gave life and space to the song’s verses.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this single?

I worked closely with a high school acquaintance, Dylan Franklin on this one, who is a co-creator, and plays guitar for the Toronto based band, “Tallies”. They are wicked and highly recommend checking their music out. Connecting with him on a musical level was an incredible experience. The time we spent in that studio will never be forgotten. I basically walked in with just an acoustic guitar, my voice, and little expectations so seeing this song grow from that was incredible to see.

How would you describe your musical style or genre?

Tough one! I’d say all over the place, but this song was made when I was primarily playing the acoustic guitar, only. Lots of influences, from the Tallest Man on Earth to Angus & Julia Stone, and Dustin Tebbutt. I grew up listening and playing everything from hardcore, punk, to indie rock, pop, and folk genres. I’ll be releasing an upcoming full-length record over the next year where you’ll be able to hear a lot more of those influences coming through. In general, I take what the ether gives me and try not to focus on fitting in any type of style or genre!

Can you share a standout moment from one of your live performances that you'll never forget?

I think returning from Vancouver to play the North by Northeast Festival (NXNE) in Toronto, Canada is up there. I had never actually played live close to my hometown of Barrie, Ontario so it was an absolute coming out party! It was an incredible moment to see all the friends I grew up playing with, or for, and getting so much support in one room really blew my mind. Shoutout to the Dakota Tavern in Toronto for being an incredible first venue to play there. The vibes were outstanding.
