Daffodildos On the Making Of “No Pride”
Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in "No Pride?"
“No Pride” challenges the watered down message that is now at corporate Pride events. Bringing the true meaning back and making sure that everyone is visible. Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminists and other transphobic groups are not welcome in our community. Queer people suffer discrimination all year round, and we need to be fighting for our rights/the rights of the people we love all the time, not just during “Pride month”. The song is a call to action!
Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "No Pride?"
It was great being able to get more people involved in the chorus gang vocals! The song is about inclusion so it was brilliant to be able to reflect that in the recording. We were lucky enough to have a producer who studied under Steve Albini, big up Third Circle Recordings.
What did you enjoy most about making this track?
Hanging out as a band and having fun whilst making sure to get a powerful message across and honouring the folx who went before us speaking out about liberation.
How did your band members initially come together?
Emily Flea and Captain Jax initially met at a Brighton Vegan Festival around 8 years ago and both knew Anni Von Flange from the local punk scene. Emily’s previous band The Fleas disbanded and they made a solo album before approaching Jax since they had put down drugs and picked up the bass. The duo then set about finding an apt drummer, and asked Anni to complete the trio of neon-painted misfits.
What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?
Until recently it was less common to see gender non-conforming people on stage, so it's great to be part of that representation and have that fed back to us from the younger queer community.
We have such beautiful fans and always have a really broad variety of people watching us, so we aren’t just preaching to the converted. It gives us an opportunity to make people stop and think about what’s going on in the world, whilst having a whole load of fun in the process!
