Chris Quesnel On the Making Of “Cherry Chapstick”
Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Cherry Chapstick" and the story it tells?
"Cherry Chapstick" was inspired by a breakup and a complicated relationship I had where we could never fully let go of each other. We’d break up, then somehow end up back together, which only led to more hurt for both of us. Eventually, I realized that maybe I was better off alone, and that experience shaped the story and emotions behind the song.
What do you like the best about this track?
What I like most about this track is the energy it has. It’s straightforward, raw, and has a dynamic rhythm that really drives the song.
What impact do you hope "Cherry Chapstick" will have on your audience?
I hope the song resonates with people who’ve gone through similar experiences in relationships. It’s about realizing when it’s time to let go, and I think a lot of people can relate to that feeling.
Can you walk us through your songwriting process and how your lyrics and melodies come together?
My process is pretty simple and raw. I usually start by singing whatever comes to mind, almost like freestyling, and recording it. Then I go back, pick the parts I like, and write down the lyrics I want to keep. From there, I build on those ideas until the song is complete.
What is your favorite part of the recording process, and is there a specific song that was particularly rewarding to record?
My favorite part of the recording process is capturing those initial ideas and seeing them evolve into a finished track. Recording "Cherry Chapstick" was particularly rewarding because it was so personal. Every step, from the vocals to the final mastering, was done independently, and that made it feel even more special.
