Cheap Escape On the Making Of “Come Clean”

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Come Clean" and the story it tells?

“Come Clean” mainly deals with the theme of betrayal. We’ve been unfortunate to come across some people in life that weren’t worth the time we spent getting to know them. The main theme of the song is wishing that they would have just “Come Clean” about who they were much earlier, and saved you the hassle!

We have a love for punk music, be it the Ramones or Green Day. We like to think that it runs through our music! It’s about serving the song, so naturally, we like to keep things simple.

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "Come Clean?"

Like most things we do, “Come Clean” was written by all of us collectively. It’s actually an older song that we had written in our previous band that we thought would fit our new sound pretty well. It’s kept pretty simple, as you can probably tell by listening to it, drawing from those punk and pop punk influences. Plenty of power chords!

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for "Come Clean?"

We record and produce all of our music ourselves in our garage studio. It gives us the freedom to experiment and mull things over if necessary.

“Come Clean” was the first song that we finished, as well as the first song that we released. I think the most interesting moment was probably when we realized that it had actually come together and was real!

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as musicians, and how did you overcome them?

Our biggest challenge yet has been getting the band back on its feet. We decided to start from the ground up after our last band disbanded. From writing the songs to rehearsing them and getting them gig ready, the whole process has been a positive challenge. We’ve taken our time and let it happen naturally, no matter how long it takes. It feels good to just be back out there again!

What do you enjoy most about performing live and connecting with your audience?

There’s nothing quite like playing in front of a crowd. Something about the rush that you get when you are up there; it’s amazing! Having people venture out to a gig to see you is very humbling too. We’re yet to have our first gig as Cheap Escape, but we’re looking forward to hitting the stage once again!
