Brennyboombox On the Making Of “Unhinged”

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

Well, I really wanted to write something more uplifting and positive, but my mind was not in that space at the time. I was in the midst of a depressive episode when I started writing for this project and "Unhinged" really reflects that. It was important that I attempt to balance out the dismal lyrical tones with pop and electronic production so this way you can still dance and have a happy experience with it but also feel it.

Was there any challenge that you encountered while making "Unhinged?"

I am an extremely open and vulnerable person with those that know me but putting that side of myself into my art was scary. I think I come off as a goofball to people who don't personally know me well. Don't get me wrong, I am a goofball and proud to be one, but I also struggle to keep my mind right and sharing that freaks me out a bit.

Can you describe the emotions or feelings you hope this single evokes in listeners?

The best case scenario for me is that listeners feel like they are not alone in their struggle to navigate life. No one really prepares you for the trials and tribulations you're going to face growing up, while trying to figure yourself out in the process. We all have bad days and struggle to see the light sometimes but you gotta fight to see that light and keep moving forward. So let's move forward together. I also really want people to dance. Dancing gets me through so much in life. It’s like this magical fuel that helps me power through my issues, so I hope my new music gives you some of that fuel.

What inspired you to pursue a career in music?

When I was in elementary school, I heard the "Baby One More Time" album by Britney Spears for the first time and from that day on that's what I wanted for myself. I wanted to be a pop star. As I got older and actively started pursuing the industry, it got very complicated and toxic, so I burned out. I took a several-year break with no real intention to get back into it and truly had that moment of acceptance that my dream was gone. However, back in 2021 I dipped my toe back in the pond and released a song titled "Free Britney" in support of Britney and the #freebritney movement that was fighting for her freedom. That song landed me an invitation to perform at the rally in Los Angeles the day her conservatorship was terminated. Being back on stage rewired me. It brought me back to the person I was before I was jaded by the industry. I think it's so interesting that Britney was the whole reason why I wanted to make music as a kid and now she's also the reason I've found my way back to making music again.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

I truly find inspiration everywhere but lately I’ve found it in dysfunction and imbalance. It’s just real. I’m happy I’ve found inspiration in that. I think it allows me to create with more of a purpose. I don’t want a surface level career just as much as I don’t want surface level relationships. If you’re going to listen to my music, then I want you to know me. Like truly know me. I want you to understand why I am the way that I am and if you see yourself in that, then come along for the ride.
