Artist Spotlight: Meet The Transits

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

This song came together really quickly. Those are often the best songs, as you just go with a feeling and don’t overthink things. We’re based in two countries – New Zealand and South Africa, so we have a particular way we record. We have found a fun, seamless way to record our music from 3 different locations. We have years of musical history together that allows us to create in this way.

What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making "Heartbreak Queen?"

That would have to be the music video. We often have an idea for a video even before the song is complete. Music videos have been a big hook for us and a great way to reach new fans. Do videos often have a storyline for deeper meaning. The video for “Heartbreak Queen” features the band playing in a destroyed band room dressed as crash test dummies. This is a visual metaphor for how we all get a bit bruised and bashed along life’s crazy journey. Check it out here: YouTube

How does "Heartbreak Queen" fit into your overall artistic vision?

“Heartbreak Queen” is the lead single off our debut album called ‘The Transits’. We released it in February. It was one of the last songs written for the album. Although the song leans into a very Pop Punk sound, we don’t like to be pigeonholed by genre. Our album covers quite a spectrum across rock, punk, indie and synth. We love that diversity and that comes from our individual musical tastes.

What has been the most memorable experience or achievement in your music career so far?

We’re a relatively young band but we’re experienced musicians. The Transits have only been together for just over a year and we feel we’ve had a lot of highs in a very short space of time. We released an album, won Best Music Video in New Zealand for our song “When you went away,” released a short film music video for “Lost Ones” and we’re growing a really cool global fanbase. We’re stoked.

What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?

Taking people on an emotional rollercoaster is important to us. There’s lots of light and shade in our music and lyrics. We love that juxtaposition. You can’t have one without the other. Our songs are mostly based on real life experiences and because that’s authentic. It’s hopefully something the audience can connect with. In terms of performance, we’re 3 very passionate people and you can’t fake that.
