Artist Spotlight: Meet Elad David
How did you come up with the theme?
The first single released from the album is a love song written from a place of pain and despair at first, but received an optimistic twist.
And for the other songs, I just tried to think of interesting topics that are not usually written about (especially not in the mainstream). Topics that touch on more important and deeper things. For example, I can say that the second song on the album - “The realm of forgotten memories,” was written about dementia, I work with the elderly a lot and know the disease closely.
In addition, the name of the album is taken from the text of the fourth song on the album -” The Voices,” which deals with schizophrenia. And it certainly describes the process I went through to write all these texts (and music). Literally the creations of my mind.
Was there any challenge that you encountered while making 'Mind's Creations?'
The only challenge that comes to my mind right now, is actually the release of the last single and the album, in this period. Because of the situation and what is happening here in Israel. I had a big dilemma about whether to release it and how to release it. And of course also in terms of marketing, I had to make a lot of changes.
What is your personal favorite song from 'Mind's Creations' and why?
This is a really difficult question. Like choosing which child you like best. But if you put me against the wall then I will probably choose - “My Path To You” :)
Can you share a bit about your musical background and the journey that led you to where you are today?
I will try to summarize it as much as possible. I started playing seriously at about the age of 12 (not including the recorder and organ lessons in elementary school). Around the age of 16, I already started performing in a band with original material. And I also did a graduation thesis in jazz. Immediately after the army, I continued to study at the Rimon Jazz School in Israel. I studied there for 3 years. During all these years and even in high school I was already writing and composing my own music (But didn't release any). Also, I played in different ensembles. In different styles, world music, classic rock, jazz, heavy rock, Israeli rock and more...
And now let's skip ahead a bit, during the Corona period I really upgraded my studio and decided to start recording and finally release my music. Of course, I also specialized in mixing and mastering and have improved a lot in production since the first album. And since then I've been releasing music non-stop. It's been almost 3 years. Most of the music I release is instrumental and in fact, this mini-album is the first to contain in its entirety, only songs and no instrumentals.
How do you balance crafting relatable stories with maintaining your unique voice as a songwriter?
The truth is that in terms of texts, I always felt that my texts were not good enough, not at a good enough level, or too simple and too kitschy. But this time, I sat for a very long time on each text, I even did a little research on each topic. Until the text was ready for me, I did not continue with the composition. And I'm really proud of this album. Of course, from the beginning, I chose topics that I have a connection to and have something to say about them. So that's probably how the balance was created. And musically I always try to balance the complex with the simple. I didn't try to impress technically too much or anything like that, just gave the song what I felt was best for it.
