Artist Spotlight: Meet Coyote Crunch

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind "Diagnosis" and the story it tells?

“Diagnosis” is a powerful message to any and all who have been struggling with health issues both physical and mental. In hopes it makes you feel the validation or accompaniment you may not be receiving. You are seen, you are heard, you are believed and you are not alone!

How did you approach the arrangement and composition of the music for "Diagnosis?"

At the inception of “Diagnosis,” there's the guitar riff you hear at the beginning of the song. We wanted this intro and verse to feel intimate and have some restraint, so we could build up some urgency and let the chorus really explode. The authentic Hammond organ was a big part of the arrangement because of its many voices, from a controlled, almost solemn hum in the pre-chorus, to a raging roar in the chorus.

How do you feel this song represents your artistic identity?

In one word: dynamics! From a whisper to a yell. We like exploiting the palette of nuances our instruments offer to create contrast between quiet and heavy passages. “Diagnosis” is a good example of that.

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

We formed back in 2020 just before the COVID lockdown. We've had the current lineup, with Guillaume on vocals, for a little over a year. We like to describe our music as "Rock'n'roll played by humans with instruments"! We're never gonna cancel a show because our laptop broke down (!). When push comes to shove, give us two acoustic guitars and a wooden box, we'll play some music for you! Our influences include bands such as Pearl Jam, Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Deep Purple, as well as punk and metal elements.

What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?

They do play an essential role! Emotions, whether they're brought about by a lyric, a melody, a chord progression or a rhythmic pattern, drive the type of energy we're injecting into our performance. Sometimes, it might be as subtle as the way we attack strings or lay into the drums. Emotions also affect our timing: we tend to play right on top of the beat when the vibe is lighthearted and mischievous, and to be a lot more laid back when the mood is darker.
