Artist Spotlight: Meet Bones in Butter

Can you share any interesting or unique stories or perspectives in 'Songs For A Sane Society?'

There isn’t one single event that marks the formation of this release. It’s rather the whole process that is worth mentioning. 'Songs For A Sane Society’ is in fact a collection of songs that grew over a period of three years. The songs were all written during the early stages of the worldwide medical emergency. I had just finished recording our first EP ‘Love or Fear’ and had planned to take it easy when the lockdown kicked in and triggered a storm of inspiration and creativity that has continued to this day.

Let me stress here that this is not a unique phenomenon as there are lots of bands and artists that have experienced similar developments during that crisis. I’d even go as far as to say that for some, the Covid tragedy also had a rather relevant positive effect.

What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making 'Songs For A Sane Society?'

Yeah, I remember finishing the framework for the song “Never Without You.” There was this part of the song that was intentionally left empty as it was meant for a guitar solo. A solo I had previously totally figured out, pictured it in my mind’s eye‚ if you know what I mean…

Then I gave this demo tape to Todor, the guitarist, gave him plenty of rope, and he radically changed the appearance of the song by introducing a guitar solo that was not only completely different from what I had envisaged but also different from anything I had heard before, including anything late John McGeoch of the band Magazine could have come up with. Oh boy how I hated him for that, I hated him because he had shattered my vision of the song…

But only for a moment as I quickly got used to that interpretation and learned to love it. I wouldn’t have it any other way. Todor is one hell of a guitarist 😊

How do you feel ‘Songs For A Sane Society’ represents your artistic identity?

Oh, that one is easy. Every song I write becomes part of myself ie. represents my artistic identity. As a matter of fact: it has always been part of myself.
And ’Songs For A Sane Society’ is a perfect snapshot of a specific period and a specific state of mind I was in.

Can you tell us more about you as a band?

Bones in Butter actually started off as a solo project in 2019. It was a vehicle with which I wanted to materialize my accumulated musical ideas after I had finally quit my day job as a translator.

But it was only after I met Luna Škopelja, the female voice that can be heard on the track ‘Her Cave’ for the first time, that I realized that Bones in Butter had become more than just a project. You see, when you collaborate with artists who themselves have a unique style, the music becomes something else that sort of overpowers your own style.

And that’s what happened with Bones in Butter. Luna’s voice changed the sound in such a dramatic fashion that things would never be the same again.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

A lot of things are going on in the world right now. We live in interesting times and I’m not sure if this is a good thing.

Today everything changes at the speed of light: world orders, technology, human and moral values, so it has become almost impossible to HIDE from inspiration. Similarly, our private lives, our emotional worlds have become affected by external events like never before in history. So, to answer your question, I find inspiration pretty much everywhere.
