Angel Lord On the Making Of “Trapped In Wonderland”

What was the creative process like for this particular "Trapped In Wonderland?”

”Trapped In Wonderland” was a song I kinda wrote stream of conscious style. Last February when I had written the song I had found myself thinking back to my teen years when I used my imagination as a sort of escapism from a lot of the negative things going on in my life and I started comparing that to Alice In Wonderland but twisted to be a bit darker, sorta like the video game Alice Madness Returns. I had written the pre chorus pretty easily but it wasn’t until I had written the bridge where I reference the red queen that I felt like this song could truly be something special and something I really wanted to release.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for this "Trapped In Wonderland?”

Absolutely, but a lot of it was having a lack of confidence in myself and my writing. I had many moments where I wondered if this song was actually bad or that I was failing at capturing the message and telling the story I wanted to tell with this song. I had to learn to trust myself and the people around me when they reassured me that the song was good.

How do you feel this "Trapped In Wonderland" represents your artistic identity?

”Trapped In Wonderland” is one of the most raw and vulnerable songs I’ve ever written. It pulls from a very real place that I think a lot of people can relate to. As an artist and a songwriter I want to be able to express something genuine and real, to make the listener feel something and I think “Trapped In Wonderland” really does that. It tackles topics that I care about not just as an artist but as a person.

How did you get started in music, and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?

Many things inspired me to become a singer/songwriter. I’ve been trying to write songs for years, since I was a kid. It wasn’t until a year and a half ago that I started trying to find a way to do something with this passion I’ve been carrying with me since I was a kid. I owe a lot of it to my vocal coach Angela, having someone to not only take a chance but show me the way when it came to starting a music career and motivating me to get better with my songwriting.

How has your music evolved since you started as a singer-songwriter? What have been some key milestones in your artistic journey?

I think my music has evolved the most with discovering my own voice and sense of style. When I was a kid I only thought people wrote songs about love/heartbreak so that’s what I tried to write. Obviously with being a kid I had no idea what I was doing or talking about but as I’ve grown and lived my life I’ve learned that people wrote songs about everything. I started pulling from my many life experiences and finding ways to talk about them in my own way. Mid 2022 to late 2022 when I had started working on my singing skills and learned how to relearn how to fall in love with my singing voice again and finding the motivation to start writing songs were major milestones that got me to this point.
