AMONG THE MASSES “Wrong Turn”

Life is a maze of choices, being the center of the turmoil of regrets, destiny, change, and success. Inspired by real-life stories that one encounters and witnesses, AMONG THE MASSES contemplate “Wrong Turn” with a storm of dark, swirling synth-infused sonics. Poignant and nostalgic, ever-blossoming, but not without a touch of evocative epicness. “Wrong Turn” is a single that gets you to feel and think about what you may want to run from. It stimulates and elevates, even if it means that you feel full-heartedly of your own trace of existential crisis.

New wave and rock spark a wonderful, picturesque chemistry in AMONG THE MASSES’s music. Their immersively expansive skyscape amazes you. Their music is so hard-hitting in a way that’s also atmospheric that it makes you want to dissolve and disappear forever. Yet at the same time, elevating. There’s a mystical and psychedelic feeling of a greater force in place, or perhaps, it’s the immediacy in that raw, pulsing confrontation of emotions. The steady but piercing beat feels like an escape with inevitable hope. Darkness is the underlying tone, but you can also feel its life and desire. If you listen even more deeply into “Wrong Turn,” you’ll find it awfully tear-jerking.

The Stockholm-based band is known for their well-crafted music inspired by guitar-based bands such as Radioahead, Pink Flyod and Television.

Check out our interview with AMONG THE MASSES, where we chat about all things music:

Punk Head: I love how immersive and nostalgic “Wrong Turn” is. How did different ideas come together?

AMONG THE MASSES: I tried to write “Wrong Turn” a couple of years ago but I couldn't get the sound right. It wasn't until I got hold of some new sequencers that I managed to get the right mood for the song.
We also came up with the part where the vocalist David Liebe is humming and that gave the song a nice melancholy feeling and everything fell into place.

PH: Is there a real-life event that inspired you to write “Wrong Turn?”

AMONG THE MASSES: There were several things that happened to some friends of mine and when I heard their stories, it inspired me to write the lyrics to “Wrong Turn.”

PH: How did you all meet?

AMONG THE MASSES: We met through mutual friends and it turned out that we had the same taste in music so we decided to start a band.

PH: How is the music scene in Stockholm?

AMONG THE MASSES: The music scene in Stockholm right now is really boring. Many of the best live scenes have been closed or shut down mostly because neighbors have been complaining about the noise.

PH: What would you like to say to your fans out there?

AMONG THE MASSES: We have some new songs recorded and we will have them on Spotify and iTunes in the near future, and we hope that our fans will enjoy them.
