Alex Gerdt On the Making Of ‘It's Later Than You Think’

What was the creative process like for this particular EP?

It was a long and fun process. It began with three songs that became a production demo. My friend Chris Shorooi liked it and encouraged me to book Atlantis Studio and record the songs live.

We ended up playing live but I kept vocals and other ambient sounds from the demo. It became a really nice sound - all the great musicians and everyone involved took the songs to another level.

Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in 'It's Later Than You Think?'

It’s a pretty melancholic tone throughout the lyrics. “Later than you think”,” hating on yourself”, “nothing seem to go my way” …and so on. But I think the sound and the feel of it deliver hope. “Looking for a clearer view”…

What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making 'It's Later Than You Think?'

My favorite part was after all the tracks were recorded, when all the layers of vocals were done. It was magical to put everything together. I wanted to keep the imperfections, I didn’t want to overwork it.

Was there a pivotal moment when you decided to follow your path as a musician?

I have played guitar and been writing songs for as long as I remember. In the last few years I feel that I have grown in to the role. My time is now. If I just dare to be myself as an artist half is won. If I do it for 100% I’ll be better than ever. If I just dare to believe I can be all that I have. That’s how it feels.

Where do you find inspiration for your songs or musical ideas?

Sometimes I listen to Ben Howard and Bon Iver. And I’ll get super inspired. I also listen to pop singers like Julia Michaels. I listen to guitar stuff, I listen to almost everything. And then I have long periods of time that I don’t listen to music at all. I just dream, think and fantasize. I go back in time and I dream about the future. Then I write.
