NIKOLI “Moves”

On the subject of moving on, the past may have gave you a punch right in the face, but you could always use it as a starting point to make a better future for yourself. “Moves” stands at the crossroad of the past and the future, looking at both directions and allowing the mixed feelings and memories passing through you.

“Moves” isn’t too angsty, nor is it too optimistic. NIKOLI explored a diverse range of feelings in this short song, filled with lo-fi pop sensitivity. His dairy-like lyrics hit you hard sometimes with the like of Holly Humberstone. The suburban, indie pop solitude, on the other hand, feels close to Marinelli’s work.

Lines like “our house is falling apart, when did it start?” Effortlessly articulate the surreal feeling of an ending while evoking the nostalgic scenery of leaving, moving out, departing from something safe and familiar. NIKOLI’s lyricism are highly relatable. Sometimes, you don’t even know why the things he sing hit you so hard. Maybe it’s the way he plays with familiar, nostalgic scenes to explore the feelings of moving on.

NIKOLI’s music proves to be multi-dimensional in storytelling. “Moves” follows a sensational change of scenes with vivid emotionally rich sonic palette. As a photographer, videographer, designer, and musician, he brings different perspectives into his music making. The visual aspect in his storytelling plays a crucial part in his songwriting.
