Femegades “Be Alone”

Femegades seem to have the best of grunge and punk rock in the becoming of finding their own voice in the music scene. But what defines they isn’t the sound, but their forwardness and unapologetic spirits to take a stand, tackle and be outspoken about controversial and sensitive topics. Femegades is a band that stands for something more in their path of music making.

“Be Alone” speaks from the perspective of a surrogate mother, who puts her body through 9-month pregnancy, however on the danger of exploitation and potential regret and damage in an less regulated industry. Around the world, the law of surrogacy varies from country to country. In the US, surrogate mother doesn’t have any right to the baby once she/he is born. She would have to sign her right away prior to birth. In the UK, surrogate mother is naturally the legal parent of the child. She would then have to transfer her right to the baby’s genetic parents if she is fully onboard. Regardless the law, the moral complexity and legal process around surrogacy is always on the edge of controversy.

Speaking of tackling sensitive issues, Femegades isn’t afraid to take a stand in this matter. Through their thought-provoking storytelling and fiercely grungy-punk soundscapes, Femegades urge listeners to reflect on the lack of regulation and attention on this matter. There are so many aspects of the process still remain problematic. Maybe it’s not about taking side but simply to have this conversation.

It seems to be what Femegades is about. Their music emerges from the love of The Clash and Bikini Kill with a little destruction and chaos from Courtney Love. They shed light on difficult topics with an optimistic attitude. Sonically, they have a unique aesthetic that seems to be both raw, angsty, moody and impressionistic.
