5 Q&A With Paranormal Arson
What was the creative process like for this particular 'Paranormal Arson?'
Everything revolves around the riff. I want to craft well-written songs, but in metal the riff is the hook. If I can get a couple of riffs that play nicely together, I can get a vibe and direction which will allow the song structure and lyrics to fall into place.
What is your favorite song from 'Paranormal Arson' and why?
I think "The Name Dies With Me" is probably the best song I've ever written. It's probably the least "traditionally" death metal, but I'm very proud of how that song came together.
What has been one of your most favorite memories along the path to making 'Paranormal Arson?'
I don't think I have one in particular, I just really enjoy the process of writing, recording, mixing. The whole thing is a learning process for me, so honing those skills is really fun.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?
I started playing guitar in 2004 when I was in high school. I started learning bass shortly after as a necessity for a band I was in. I made my first one-man project around then called O.O.C., which was what I originally released the song "Pink Fluffy Kittens" under. Since then I've been in a handful of bands of the metal/hardcore/punk variety.
What role do you feel emotions play in your music, and how do you channel them into your performances?
It's everything. I'm under no delusion that I'm a highly-skilled musician. I know I'm not John Petrucci or Yngwie Malmsteen, so making sure each riff has an emotion behind it is very key. Telling a story is the main goal, and the riffs are the vessel for that.
