5 Q&A With Gods Only Villain

What is the creative process like?

For “Who Shot Ya?” I guess the process was a little different than writing for the rest of the album (Good For Nothing) because I had the Wayne verse so I kinda just fed off what he did to it and then we kicked the song over to Earthworm and he went absolutely crazy on the third verse. The goal was just to have fun with it you know… Show off a little bit.

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Who Shot Ya?"

For me, honestly that verse came to me in probably about thirty minutes and recorded in thirty more minutes. I shot the vocal to Tyler Thomas at Red Cap Studios who executive produced my album… he did his thing to it and sent it to Worm. Now I will say I think once Worm had the song he was really focused on getting it right with Wayne on the song so we didn’t get the vocals back from him for a minute and in my opinion he couldn’t have more perfectly nailed that verse. He just was in the pocket with it from start to finish. He made it a record.

Were there any memorable or standout moments during the recording sessions for this song?

I mean without a doubt having Lil Wayne on the song was a bucket list feature but beyond that like I mentioned, getting Earthworms verse back and then overall getting to the Dolby Atmos masters for the track and with the rest of the album was something special.

Can you tell us more about you as an artist?

My name is Gods Only Villain, if you know me people call me Gov for short and I always feel the need to set this straight off the jump but that name is not at all meant to be a stab at Christianity or “satanic” its in fact the opposite. If you have seen the movie “Book of Eli” with Denzel Washington. It is more as if that character (Gods Only Villain) is a mercenary. So it’s in a possessive form or that of which being owned by God. “Sent to do the lords dirty work.”

Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you're particularly excited about?

Yes! “Good For Nothing.” 17 songs including “Who Shot Ya?” Available everywhere on Halloween Day. It is so much more than just an album that we put together. It is an experience you can only capture by listening to the storyline throughout and I think if you do that, it’s really an undeniable body of art… That is very little credit to me. All the artists that came together and made it possible is why it’s just this otherworldly project. Shout out to Tyler Thomas and his wife Chey at Red Cap, my brother iDAViD, Bayleigh Rodrigues, Jewelia and just all the producers and everyone helping me take an idea I had at the beginning of 2024 and bring it to life. Go download it, save it, and all that!
