5 Q&A With Cal Lynn
What inspired you to write the lyrics/music for "Charlie's Undercover?"
I've been really into Pet Shop Boys and Michael Jackson I love the synth bass on 'West End Girls and 'Thriller' so I recently purchased a new synth to try and replicate that sound. When I first tracked “Charlie's Undercover” it was just bass synth but my drummer Cal Alner ended up tracking electric bass over the synth bass to give it that extra push. The lyrics are personal and quite true in parts but I do play on the emotion.
What are you most proud about this track?
I think this tracks a big step in the right direction. I wasn't too happy with my previous work the way it turned out and this track has elements of some of my favourite music and it's really true to myself. If it feels good a few months down the line then I know its worth while.
I also loved tracking this one and I'm proud to have collaborated with some great guys on this. Ben Buxley did wonders on the synth. I couldn't of finished the track without him and Cal Alner my drummer was amazing at drums/percussion/bass. Then finally I had James Hunt guitarist for Nature TV slot in a cheeky guitar solo. Brighton has a great range of musicians so it's a pleasure to have people involved.
What impact do you hope "Charlie's Undercover" will have on your audience?
I hope they can relate to the lyrics and the emotion behind the song. They're plenty of hooks in there. I love the outro section.
Can you tell us more about you as an artist?
I've been writing music since I was 14. I'm now 29.
I've always loved Marc Bolan. I love playing Live.
I've played in some great bands but now I'm just focused on having a strong catalogue of work and hopefully my first album in the near future.
How do you continuously grow and evolve as an artist?
Keep experimenting with new sounds being true to myself...
It's super expensive to be an artist now especially solo. So making wise choices.
