5 Q&A With Sonofdov

What was the creative process like for this particular song?

While working on a different song, I became stuck in a section and couldn't find a way out. Frustrated, I started strumming a quiet chord progression and began to hum a melody, which turned into “Natural Disaster.”

Were there any challenges or breakthrough moments during the songwriting process for "Natural Disaster?"

It went pretty quickly, but the chorus took some time. I wasn't sure if a one-word chorus, "waves", was a shortcut. Nothing else would work or fit, so I figured I'd go with it. Yes, and the song probably should have been called "Waves" ha ha.

Have you noticed any particular interpretations or connections that listeners have made with "Natural Disaster?"

I try this when writing songs, it's such a personal feeling at times and I hope people who listen make up their own interpretations or can connect in some way. I hear a lot of melancholy joy reactions so far. If you are in a specific mood, you can harness that mood, such as melancholy, joy, and nostalgia.

How did you get started in music, and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?

Its started early while listening to my big sister’s music collection. I think we all sing or hum to soothe our energy. I don't remember not making up songs or singing something, but I never thought about writing until later. It was and is so difficult to do, but it’s just part of who I am and I need it. Ha Ha!

How do you balance crafting relatable stories with maintaining your unique voice as a songwriter?

That's a great question. First, I start with a chord pattern and melody line. Sometimes words come quickly and might stick, but other times it's a wrestling match. I'm not a very good narrative writer, so I tend to use analogies and metaphors that are open to interpretation. Most importantly, I need to connect to the song and it has to possess some kind of emotion or I can't do it. I'm hopeful that being genuine with all it's beautiful ugly ways comes through.
