Selena Gomez Is Taking Back Control in New Song “Single Soon”

Selena Gomez shares the first glimpse into her upcoming studio album. “Single Soon,” the fun-filled, end-of-summer anthem is essentially about breaking free from a toxic relationship.

Gomez has been teasing new materials, and “Single Soon” is only the beginning. “Y’all have been asking for new music for a while,” Gomez wrote on Instagram. “Since I’m not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that’s perfect for the end of summer.”

It’s not hard to hear the difference between the new song and Gomez’s past releases, though she has been on a track of embracing her true self and adding diversity to her catalog. In the Apple TV documentary, My Mind and Me, she said that she was taking a new creative direction.

“The music I’m doing right now is about real things that I’m walking through,” the singer told Vanity Fair in January. “It’s really powerful, strong, very pop. The theme generally is freedom—freedom from relationships, freedom from the darkness.”

“Single Soon” resonates with the message of freedom, in which the main character of the lyrics is finally setting herself free from boy troubles.

“I’m picking out this dress/Trying on these shoes/’Cause I’ll be single soon/I’ll be single soon/I know he’ll be a mess when I break the news, but I’ll be single soon/I’ll be single soon.”
