Miley Cyrus Reflects Life in the Spotlight in “Use to be Young”
“Used to Be Young” is here with a hint of nostalgia, stirring some deep emotions. Miley Cyrus is in reflective mode in her new song, much about the past, the spotlight, Hannah Montana and everything in between. Over the past week, she has been dropping excerpts, now and there, building up to the release on Aug. 25, a “particular date” that holds significant personal meanings to her and her career.
“This song is about honoring who we’ve been, loving who we are, and celebrating who we will become,” said Cyrus about the release. “I feel proud when reflecting on my past and optimistic when thinking about the future.”
“Hannah is for kids,” she said in a recent YouTube clip, but “Miley is for grown-ass men in heels.”
There is essentially nothing wrong with being young and fun. Figuring out who we are is part of what being a young adult is about, but in the case of Cyrus, she was criticized heavily. “I know I used to be crazy/I know I used to be fun/You say I used to be wild/I say I used to be young,” she sings in the chorus.
The official music video sees her at the most vulnerable, but also the most empowered. Consisting of closeups of her singing the song and tearing up, the video catches Cyrus at real emotional moments.
The new track arrives just five months after the release of her LP, Endless Summer Vacation.
