Yasamine Ghorbankhani On the Making Of ‘Vulnerable’

Can you tell us about the inspiration behind your EP 'Vulnerable' and the story it tells?

I always struggled with vulnerability especially in this generation where having feelings and emotions makes you look weak. I am a sensitive person and that made me feel small, so I blocked my emotions for a long time since being vulnerable was very scary for me. Putting myself out there, making music, sharing my stories it means I must be vulnerable. Within’ the last couple of years, I realized that even though it’s scary I can only be myself and I rather go to sleep knowing I love and respect who I am. So, this EP is important to me. I want to be able to do what I love to do, what makes me feel excited and alive. This EP is the start of me being fully myself and being comfortable with my vulnerability. Not being afraid to feel.

Could you discuss the lyrical themes or messages conveyed in 'Vulnerable?'

Each song has a different message. They’re all inspired from life experiences throughout the years. I really like to write about deep topics. From writing about gaining strength and getting my power back (Your loss, my gain) to understanding how people’s way of loving’ has nothing to do with my worth (I hope u heal). I always try to write about things that people can relate. It’s also a form of therapy for me and it’s like “wrap up” an end of a chapter. I try to tell stories in my songs.

How did you work with the producer or engineers to bring your vision for this EP to life?

I feel very lucky I met someone that has the same vision has me. We both are very connected to music and we both feel like it’s important to be vulnerable. I really wanted to find someone I can trust and feel comfortable with. It’s a perfect match. He also knows me well now; I mean I share my stories/songs with him, so he knew exactly what to do to make it sound the way I wanted to sound.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and how you got started in music?

My musical journey started when I was very young. I was always drawn to music. I started to write at the age of eight it helped me a lot. My dad was also a singer. I did couple of cover videos and put some videos online then after a while I stopped because the real world hit me. In 2015, I signed up for singing lessons and met my amazing vocal coach. After years of coaching, I told her how I used to write all the time, but I couldn’t anymore. She magically helped me to write again. I wrote and recorded my first single ‘’From Above’’ (the fastest song I’ve written) in 2019. I am now very inspired and can write easily. I truly think learning to be ok with being vulnerable helped me a lot.

What are your future goals or aspirations as a musician?

It’s always scary to jump into the unknown but once you do it, it becomes easier. So, I just want to keep going. My goal is to become better, do things I haven’t done yet, keep allowing myself to be vulnerable, get out of my comfort zone and hopefully help people out with my songs. Maybe some people can relate, and it can make them feel less alone just like how I feel towards some artists and songs.
